Americans are increasingly supportive of tariffs on cheap, imported goods from foreign countries to protect American industries and workers against wild globalization. In a poll by Rasmussen Reports, roughly 50 percent of Americans said the federal government should place tariffs on goods from countries that pay very low wages to their workers, as opposed to only 26 percent of Americans who said tariffs should not be imposed on foreign countries.
About 24 percent of Americans said they were not sure if the government should use tariffs to protect American industries.
Additionally, a plurality of Americans, about 44 percent, said the federal government is not doing enough to protect U.S. manufacturers and businesses from foreign competition from globalization which has been exacerbated by endless multinational free trade agreements supported by the Democratic and Republican party establishments.
he support for protective tariffs has increased from two years ago, in 2015, when 47 percent of Americans polled by Rasmussen Reports said the federal government should place tariffs on foreign countries dumping cheap, imported products in the U.S.
In that 2015 poll, a plurality of Americans, about 40 percent, said free trade agreements like NAFTA and KORUS take jobs away from Americans.

You know I'd settle for making America middle-class again...and if some people got rich in the process, more power to them.
We seem to be in the minority here, but I agree with you.
Unions and onerous regulations are what made companies flee to foreign countries. My father worked in the steel mills all his life. Ridiculous demands by the union, such as thirteen weeks of vacation, hurt the industry badly.
In 1969 when my husband graduated from college he bought a new Toyota because it was a good car and cheap. I think that’s called freedom.
“Protecting the American worker”, smacks a bit of Socialism to me.
Everybody "steals" everybody's technology. The consumer wins.
uses free prison labor
Great idea. Why don't we do that? Our medieval prison system is in SUCH need of reform.
doesnt have to meet the same quality standards as US firms
Buyers in the free market decide the standards of quality by voting with their money in their purchases.
How so?
The only thing that motivates free enterprise is profits (price minus cost). Government's high taxes, unconstitutional suffocating regulations, unconstitutional forced business-killing minimum wage, unconstitutional competitive-killing subsidies (bribes), and unconstitutional union protection has forced such higher costs creating such an unfriendly business environment in the U.S. that industry has fled to other countries with much friendlier business environments.
Industry doesn't care if a country shoots itself in the foot with tariffs. They'll keep chugging along doing what they do best and if they have competitive quality with competitive prices, they will be successful regardless of another country's misguided tariffs.
The key to economic prosperity is REMOVING GOVERNMENT BARRIERS & INTERFERENCE. Doing away with the things listed above actually fixes the problem motivating industries to return and prosper in an opportunistic and competitive business environment. Those measures Trump has begun implementing to remove those government barriers is why businesses want to return and is why the economy will take off, grow, and prosper mightily.
Socialism benefits no one but the government. Socialism promises but does not deliver, whether "protection" or any other social program.
Freedom benefits the consumer AND allows a wealth of opportunity for the worker/entrepreneur. FREEDOM, not government, is what made and will again make America great.
ULTIMATE MAGA: RESTORING OUR FREE CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.
Keep fighting the good fight of faith and freedom.
Yeah, but Harleys suck and Jap bikes were fast, dependable, and much less costly.
We don't need to trade with China at all .
It's not trade it's China waging a one way economic war , economic warfare with currency manipulation, stealing of tech, markets, manufacturing capability, government dumping etc.
You're wrong . dead wrong. I'm for a free market inside the USA.there is no need nor mandate in the Constitution to trade with China nor most countries.
I would put a tariff on China goods a very high one for starters then cut off all trade and have free trade no regulations no taxes except the tariff(As the tarrif was the only tax was in Early America for a century when America grew faster than all other countries ). no trade with China .with other countries some but none in Asia.
You agree with Obama to turn the USA into a 3rd world country.
Well at least you agree industry is fleeing to China. Not fleeing stolen. but you don't talk about the 20 trillion debt, the 100’s of trillions of unfunded liabilities, crumbling infrastructure, ssi and medicare ballooning, any one of these will destroy the USA. and you can't deny that so keep doing the same thing.
I'm for reducing regulations to zero. no government only military and border control . the only tax is the high tariff. you do need a tax for the military but i guess you think a socialist task like a progressive income tax or property tax(more socialism) is better right? Oh the tariff the evil tariff what has cause all the problems the media says .they say that to destroy America and you fall for it.
How to fix America. 1. Do away with all laws and regulations . Return to the constitution and the bill of right and amendments up to the 15th.
2.Add this to the Constitution. In dealing with domestic affairs The only laws government officials may pass are those that prevent the use of force(assault, murder, rape, trespassing, stealing, harnessing etc.,
3. the only tax a high tarrif on imported goods. the only functions of government are military, defense(economic as with the tarrif as well as military defense), border control
4. All laws have to be passed with a 60% of legislatures , sunset laws, and no regulations, no governemnent agencies doj fbi irs fda anyone want these? Public must approve by vote on each law 60%.
Loony stuff, there Mr. Democrat.
You're crazy since you agree with Barak Obama’s trade and debt policies . The USA has been running on debt , 20 trillion in debt which any SANE individual realizes will create a debt bubble that will crash. 150 trilion in unfunded liabilities etc. China is deindustrializing the USA.
http://www.businessinsider.com/deindustrialization-factory-closing-2010-9
The United States is rapidly becoming the very first “post-industrial” nation on the globe. All great economic empires eventually become fat and lazy and squander the great wealth that their forefathers have left them, but the pace at which America is accomplishing this is absolutely amazing. It was America that was at the forefront of the industrial revolution.
Click here to see the facts >
It was America that showed the world how to mass produce everything from automobiles to televisions to airplanes. It was the great American manufacturing base that crushed Germany and Japan in World War II. But now we are witnessing the deindustrialization of America. Tens of thousands of factories have left the United States in the past decade alone. Millions upon millions of manufacturing jobs have been lost in the same time period. The United States has become a nation that consumes everything in sight and yet produces increasingly little. Do you know what our biggest export is today?
Waste paper. Yes, trash is the number one thing that we ship out to the rest of the world as we voraciously blow our money on whatever the rest of the world wants to sell to us. The United States has become bloated and spoiled and our economy is now just a shadow of what it once was. Once upon a time America could literally outproduce the rest of the world combined. Today that is no longer true, but Americans sure do consume more than anyone else in the world. If the deindustrialization of America continues at this current pace, what possible kind of a future are we going to be leaving to our children?
Any great nation throughout history has been great at making things. So if the United States continues to allow its manufacturing base to erode at a staggering pace how in the world can the U.S. continue to consider itself to be a great nation? We have created the biggest debt bubble in the history of the world in an effort to maintain a very high standard of living, but the current state of affairs is not anywhere close to sustainable. Every single month America does into more debt and every single month America gets poorer.
So what happens when the debt bubble pops?
The deindustrialization of the United States should be a top concern for every man, woman and child in the country. But sadly, most Americans do not have any idea what is going on around them.
Well, take two Valium, go to bed, and call me in the morning.
You are the insane one since you think this 20 trillion dollar debt is not the problem and this borrowing is sustainable.
To you I'm the problem not the 20 trillion in debt , 100 plus trillion in unfunded liabilities, crumbling infrastructure etc.
Your obama who you agree with and other politicians who sold out to China and globalists billionaires turned the USA into a 3rd world country.
Which means at best China is a kleptocratic state.
To the degree a government is socialist, it is a Kleptocratic State whether the U.S. or China or anywhere else.
