Both my paternal grandparents were Cherokee, except my grandfather had maybe an eighth German. The German side actually had a revolutionary war hero. Then they lived with Cherokee as missionaries, intermarried and traveled the trail of tears west with them. Maternal side of the family, like many others, saw the writing on the wall and left their property in Georgia and moved to Arkansas to avoid the trail of tears. Unlike Fauxahontis, I actually have copies of roll calls with both families.

I’m so glad you know your background. Mine was pretty much kept secret. I post my great grandmother but I actually somewhat remember visiting my grand-fathers mother in the hills of Kentucky a she was certainly Indian. I was told to be very quiet that she was very old. She was probably in her 90’s. It wasn’t talked about to us.
