National ID card has already begun.
My state has opted out but if in 2020 you won’t be able to fly anywhere without this ID, unless the law is changed, our state will have to comply and offer it.
My drivers license, which I just renewed in Aug., states “not
for federal identification.”
IIRC when this act was implemented NO federal money came with it so it is quite an expense for the states.

The Real ID is a requirement that States require proof of citizenship or legal status, social security number, address, to obtain a license. Also certain information required to be on the card itself, and the card is to be tamper proof. I just looked up DHS, and all States are compliant or filed an extension. This ID needed to fly, enter some Federal facilities and nuclear plants.
What is being proposed now is BIOMETRIC ID that would be required to get a job, open a bank account or get a loan, fly, just about anything. Big invasion of privacy.
