GITHUB is a front end based on web services to display information that is stored in the GIT database. GIT itself is a content management system, for tracking data being moved and and out, as well as signing updates, and is most typically used for software code configuration management. It was originally developed by Linus Torvalds for managing the Linix kernel code, because he wasn’t happy with the open source products of the time, and wanted something to compete with proprietary products like Visual Source Safe/Team Foundation Server, Rational Rose, etc.
