Nervous Republicans fear they’ll pay if government shuts down

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is confident that Democrats will take the blame if the government shuts down this weekend or Congress fails to find a fix to prevent DACA recipients from being deported. But Republicans on Capitol Hill aren't so sure.

Many of them fear that voters would fault the GOP after looking at Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, his past flirtation with letting federal funding expire and the fact that Republicans are in control of the White House, the Senate and the House.

"When there are shutdowns, our side usually takes the hit," said Republican Rep. Charlie Dent, who is retiring from the competitive Allentown, Penn.,-based district he's represented for nearly a dozen years.

"It will be difficult for us to deflect the blame — whether we deserve it or not," he added.

Putting government operations at risk is a political gamble for both sides, but it's clear that Republicans think the stakes — possibly their control of Congress — are too high to chance a shutdown or the possible deportation of DACA recipients.

If they were as certain as Trump that Democrats would take the fall, GOP campaign operatives would be working overtime to ensure Congress failed.

Why is it that the GOP/Repubulicans are ALWAYS at fault when there is a government shutdown?

Because they (GOP) always accept whatever premise is put forth by their opponents/ media, always.

Pfft. It’s been ‘shut down’ so many times now that no one will notice without Obama there to put up false barricades on national monuments.

Really, would anyone notice other than the Fed workers who will get a free vacation, and then get paid anyway after the thing gets resolved?

I say, close it and leave it closed until the next President is sworn in. Those ‘workers’ classified by .gov as non-essential for a reason.

No reason to *ever* bring them back. Second step in balancing the budget. The first was gutting the useless State Department.

‘The employees will get any back pay’

That is also a problem for me. Why would they be paid for time they didn’t work. They’re overpaid and underworked to start with, this is just an additional insult to taxpayers.

As far as I’m concerned, this is an occupational hazard of the cushy job they accepted. Sometimes, the tax river gets dammed up and stops flowing. Oh well. Should have not been so lazy and taken a job in the private sector and risked permanent layoff with no pay.

It’s far more outrageous to give the non-essential workers pay for time they didn’t work (assuming they ever worked at all). Paycheck Harvesters is all they are. If they’re non-essential for one day, they are non-essential for all days.

‘You’re Fired!’ as some famous guy once said...

After the last temp shutdown the Pubbies actually gained seats. Only the press and Dems were unhappy.

Yep; Ted Cruz actually turned it into a Presidential run and outlasted all but one primary opponent...

Back in the 70s, my FIL worked for the ATF. I mentioned the job security he had and he said it was balanced out by their pay being less than comparable work in private life.

If that was true, allowing civil servants to unionize and drive up their wages must have cured it. Now, it’s all cush, no push.
