New Haven is hardly “southeast Michigan.”

I’ve seen another video from a dashcam.

I don’t think that is a meteor—that looks like something got shot out of the sky.

Meteors streak in a line. This thing broke up.

Is there an aerial of the crater?

What ever happened with the long anticipated Chinese satellite fall from orbit. It went somewhere.

I am sure that a meteor can cause a sonic boom and cause the ground to shake but I wouldn’t call it an earthquake.

Interestingly, last night I was up late laying on my couch watching TV and at around 12:30 AM or so, I heard a low boom, more like a rumbling sound and felt a bit of a shake sort of like a big heavy truck had gone right past my house. I felt another rumble a few minutes later. I checked the USGS website when I got up this morning and nothing was reported as far as any earthquakes in my area – York PA and nothing in the local news about any explosions.

I wonder if it was a “frost quake”.

It’s been well below freezing for the last few weeks but then we had a warm up to the mid 50's followed by a rapid drop in temperature below freezing and with snow.

Missed it’s target. Detroit is just a little bit to the south.

This is why we have to keep track of near-Earth objects (NEO’s) very closely. A relatively small meteor (maybe 10-15 feet in diameter) that survives entry into the Earth’s atmosphere and then explodes maybe a mile off the ground could explode with the force of a 150 to 200 KT nuclear warhead—an explosive force powerful enough to flatten a city underneath it.

Immediate aftermath of Chelyabinsk meteor fragmentation at high altitude, with a delay due to shock-wave propagation to ground level.

I am in the downriver area. Southern suburbs of Detroit. Bright flash, and rattled the windows. First thought was thundersnow, but no storms in the area.

The flash of light and boom was reported here on FR almost immediately.

Meteor that lit up the night sky over Michigan did NOT cause the 2.0 magnitude earthquake

Seems it was just a weird coincidence that a small earthquake happened at the same time the meteor was seen.
