Wishes We Had More Immigrants From Norway. Turns Out We Once Did
NPR ^ | January 12, 2018 | Nurith Aizenman

In the Thursday meeting in which President Trump complained about "having all these people from shithole countries come here" — and singled out Haiti, El Salvador and Africa as examples — he also added that, "we should have more people from Norway."

In fact there was a time when we did.

From 1870 to 1910 a quarter of Norway's working-age population emigrated, mostly to the United States. You read that right — one-fourth of its workers left the country.

“Giants in the Earth”
One of the best books you will ever read. PERIOD.
The other two of the trilogy, not so much.

Read it and enjoy it.
No matter where your family came from.
Was used in schools everywhere, until 1950’s.

Giants in the Earth is Ole Edvart Rølvaag’s classic Norweigian-American immigration novel. Part of a trilogy, the novel follows a Norwegian pioneer family’s struggles with the land and the elements of the Dakota Territory as they try to make a new life in America. The book is based partly on Rølvaag’s personal experiences ...

Yes, and the government did not supply them with financial or social assistance programs to integrate and assimilate, nor did the government provide them with Norwegian language based “English as a second language” assistance in the schools, nor anywhere else. Unlike everyone INSISTS “must” be provided today to certain classes of immigrants and not just LEGAL immigrants. Nor did they get food stamps, Medicaid or many other welfare helps. And yet, amazingly by today’s standards they managed to progress and assimilate in society.

Of course, back then there was no welfare and you had to work. Now people from Haiti, El Salvador, and Africa have an unemployment rare of 89-92% (2016 figures).

White Europeans in general have no desire to migrate to the USA. They prefer countries like Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
My parents visited me after I had been in the US for 30 years and they could not wait to board that Lufthansa flight back home. They told me they found America a scary place. I don’t think that this country can expect immigration from Europe for the next century. I find that the only concern Europeans have is when and where to go on their next vacation.

Yeah. Were many of them like Thor Gunderson?

If I wasn’t an American, I wouldn’t want to immigrate here either. People who have jobs work themselves to death. The cities are shitholes. Health care is a disaster. The racial troubles are only getting worse. I’d go to Canada, NZ, and Australia too.

Gundersen was so terrible that we stopped taking in Norwegians.

Or maybe it was Swedes, since everybody thought he was a Swede.

Random Facts: The actor who played Thor Gundersen (Christopher Heyerdahl) says his father was a cousin of famous Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl.

Time was, you could take Norwegian as your foreign language in high school in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

There were that many Norwegians there years ago.

Large group of folks with Norwegian ancestors here in Central Texas, Clifton in Bosque County. One hilarious Historical Marker near Cranfills Gap (home of the Horny Toad Bar and Grill) reads in part “...the rocky hills of Central Texas reminded the Norwegian settlers of their home...” You talk about your poetic license! I’m sure they had 105 temps, rattlesnakes and Comanche Indians in Oslo...

The Bunkhouse BBQ in Clifton has the by gosh finest brisket on this rock-ball...hands down.

I make a pilgrimage there every time I visit my mom in Whitney.
