In fact there was a time when we did.

Modern Scandinavian countries - always pleasantly referred to as role models by the likes of Bernie Sanders and ilk, can boast of:
* socialist medicine
* euthanasia on demand (and grotesquely high suicide rates in general)
* Eugenic eradication of Down Syndrome and other disabilities among babies through abortion (especially Iceland which is not exactly Scandinavia but in the neighborhood)
* New-age ecology movements and global warming dogma have replaced European Christian traditions.
Ironically if you visit Europe, it is in fact immigrants from Africa and the Carribbean keeping the old beautiful churches alive.
And most people directly from those places have a work ethic and motivation which preclude them from being on Welfare. Your cab driver will likely be a Ghanaian or from some place similar for example.
And it is the church leaders from those countries who hold our Marxist Pope in Rome and weak Archbishop of Canterbury in London true to the conservative doctrines of Christianity with regard to marriage, gender, pro-life, et al. in the face of the liberalizing trends touted in the West.
Not saying we need more immigration, just that I won’t fall for the “look at Scandinavia as a model” trick.

people coming from areas a century ago had similar culture as western society, and were here for opportunity and more freedom not a welfare state.
Two thoughts here: first, what would NPR’s folk hero Garrison Keillor have done for comic material without the “Norwegian farmers” he relied on as foils for his stories of “Lake Wobegon” back in the 80s when he was actually entertaining?
Second, overall Scandinavian immigration affected multiple parts of the US, as other FReepers have already noted. The central KS town of Lindsborg was settled by Swedish immigrants and that fact is still celebrated today. Further north, the Norwegians liked the agricultural promise of north-central KS and you can still hear some who speak like they live in central Minnesota. The names on mailboxes and cemetery headstones also reveal much about immigration patterns.
My family was from Norway. I know very little about them other than that they came over before World War One.

Norway keeps its socialism afloat on North Sea oil. Plus a lot of Norwegian offshore companies that pay no taxes. Without that they would be down to fishing and farming.

My grandmother spoke Finnish as she was born there but also spoke perfect English as she lived in Minnesoda.
