I used to drive by an active missile silo in the late 1980’s for one semester in college. It was maybe 50 yards off the road, max (if you were going the right direction).

Minuteman II maybe Minuteman III by then. Always figured the Russians would try to dig that one out with a MIRV’d warhead (along with each of the others).

What to do?

Report to nearest bar, and partake of apocalypse happy hour specials.

If it makes you feel any better, at this distance, we were still working on "Launch On Warning".

If the Pres had good evidence that the USSR was planning an attack, we would have beaten them to the draw and launched first.(They had to fuel their rockets, before launch, we did not.) We were listening to their phone conversations, via Ivy Bells, and others. There was no point in nuking empty silos.

Our missiles were more accurate, we had more of them, our radar was better, and our subs were quieter and more reliable as well as that few Red Navy subs sailed without an American tail.

From 1959 on, the US was never in any real danger. The USSR bankrupted itself trying to keep up. That's why it collapsed.

Now that Obama has finished, however, we are closer to losing a nuclear exchange than at any time in the last 50 years.

Right there, is a good reason to put the d#%ksucker against a wall and shoot his skinny a$$.
