Research shows that the key feature in terms of the (economic, for the United States) “value” of an immigrant is education. Immigrants from Norway are better educated than immigrants from Haiti, in the aggregate, although we do get college-educated Haitians. Some of my best friends are Mexican and Salvadoran, but they don’t have the education of immigrants from Canada.
Thus, if you’re a benefit of the doubt person, you can understand a point that’s out there in general knowledge, even if Trump couldn’t quite get it out.
There’s also the difference between “Haiti is a bad place,” which it is, and “Haitians are bad people,” which some are and some aren’t, just like any other country.
This country doesn’t exist to accept the best. Its for the weakest people, whether Haitians or Bum Irish immigrants like our family, to thrive and do well against all odds. America isn’t for the college educated. Its for the downtrodden of countries that cant even speak the language. Its the city on a hill.
