A flight that was four hours into its course, bound for Tokyo's Narita Airport Tuesday, had to return to its origin of Los Angeles International Airport after an 'unauthorized person' was on-board.

The flight from LAX to Tokyo is about 12 hours long. The total time for the flight to take off and return was just over eight hours.

Indeed. Had they no duct tape? No zip ties? Wrap ‘em, strap ‘em into a steward/ess’s jump seat for the duration of the flight. Thank you for flying Con Air.

Teigen seems like a pretty sharp cookie, based on her tweets. I love that one.

That the police/authorities questioned passengers sitting around the mystery passenger is quite interesting as well.

Or could it be due to Japanese rules on security, having accurate passenger flight manifests, and the like?

I’ve thrown a couple of HVAC flux duct straps into my carryon bag for just such an eventuality. Think a giant economy-sized zip tie no human could break.

“Could it be a muzzie?”

That’s what I’m thinking. Japan isn’t too hot on that bunch. If he had landed on Japanese soil, half of the Western media would have shown up, along with every Western lawyer possible. They would have demanded that he be permitted to bring his family over. Of course, in that culture, ‘family’ can extend quite wide, as in about 1.5 billion people.

It couldn’t end well for Japan, so they told ANA they wouldn’t be permitted to land there, and they’d have to find another airport, or ditch. So they went back.

Just a mistake in pre-screening, in that case.

“Here is the path the plane took showing the spot where it turned around.”

Considering that Japan is pretty much exactly west of Los Angeles, I can see why they turned back - they would have ended up somewhere in Siberia if they kept going that way.

Cue the ‘nobody is illegal’ crowd. Papers? He doesn’t need no stinking papers to fly. Maybe he’s a dreamer...

I remember an old story about a guy who flew to Auckland, NZ who thought he was on a flight to Oakland, CA.

I remember that, too. It happened to a guy stationed in Germany in the early 1980s. I was stationed in Spain at the time.

In that case, the flight attendant was Australian, and the way she said "Auckland" sounded just like "Oakland." And there were no ticket scanners at the time.

Get an Ipad, earphones, a seat charger and download some movies or shows to to it. Makes the trip seem a lot less consequential. It would be a great opportunity to binge watch something like game of thrones, downton abey or vikings.

I have a little DVD player that I purchased for airplane use. On recent flights, I have been on planes that have plugs for electronic devices, or movie apps that you can use to download movies to your iPad. (Hint: you should download the app on your iPad before boarding the plane. The internet on the plane is *very* slow.) Some planes have monitors in the backs of the seats so that you have a selection of entertainment. My favorite is the map that shows the current position of the plane, along with altitude and ground speed. When I was on a flight from Tokyo to Dulles last year, the plane reached an amazing 806 knots ground speed.

With all of that entertainment, however, I usually just fall asleep on the really long flights.

I agree. It could have been something like child abduction by a Japanese parent of a mixed marriage child where the U.S. parent has custody. Most likely it was federal law enforcement officials that made the decision rather than ANA.

Adak? I don’t think the runway is long enough. It would handle C-130s or P-3... smaller airframes or larger capable such as C17 or a C-141 (perhaps). Also, since the Navy buttoned up operations it is probably less capable than ever.
