Republican strategist Karl Rove said Friday that President Trump would be wise to spend 2018 focusing on his agenda, rather than campaigning leading up to the midterms.
In an interview on Fox News, Rove said that Trump has enjoyed a boost in his popularity in recent days because of his focus on tax reform. By putting an emphasis on his policy agenda, Rove argued, Trump could turn around his low approval ratings.
"He's not very popular and the way to become more popular is to become less political and more involved in his agenda," said Rove, a former senior aide to President George W. Bush.
Trump is fresh off the first major legislative victory of his presidency after congressional Republicans passed a sweeping rewrite of the nation's tax code this week. The president signed that measure into law on Friday.
For most of his first year in office, Trump has suffered dwindling approval ratings, which Rove attributed to the president's off-the-cuff attacks against critics and political opponents as well as his bombastic, combative rhetoric.
Trump has relished campaign-style rallies, even after taking office this year. He often uses the events to tout his victory in the 2016 election and boasting about his Electoral College win.
The Washington Post reported that Trump met earlier this week with his former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, the former head of the Republican National Committee, to discuss the 2018 midterms.
"The president ought to spend 2018 focusing on his job as president and advancing an agenda that makes a difference in the lives of ordinary Americans, and he should downplay politics," Rove said on Fox.
What theyre doing is using Roy Moore as an excuse to try to persuade Trump not to campaign for candidates. The problem with this logic is that Moore sunk himself. The media had a fullcourt press against Moore and he lost by what, within two percent?
Yeah Trump should have dragged Moore over the finish line to win ALABAMA.
Go outside and play with Jeb, Karl. And tell him to stop crying
He is a big, obsolete fat face. He should spend 2018 attending to his own health, instead of his white board obsession which is so yesteryear.
He is blinded by his Bush-ism and hatred of Trump.
Oh just go away you losing jerk (Robin that is)
I can’t say I have a lot of faith in Karl Rove’s campaign strategies.
No one gives a flying fig about Rove and his opinions. Fox just can’t let go of the Bush crowd.
Rush has been hitting the Never Trump crowd daily. Good on him for doing it. Kristol, Will, Hayes ...and all of the other snooty think tankers are bitter and angry and will never stop their crap. Pitiful.
You’re a bad idea, Karl.
He seems to have cast his lot with the uniparty and wants to be friends with people who probably despise him anyway, rather than the base of the Trump voting coalition.
In other words, he sees the voters as people to be manipulated, not served. There are now far too few people in politics with any concept of serving their voters as well as the wider electorate. Many seem to want to serve special interests or offshore powers, perhaps that pays well but we need to keep working for a cleaner, more responsible political model on our side and hope that the left will do the same on their side (where a guy like Sanders who at least has some affinity to his base is equally despised by the establishment).
If we could get back to that (it was probably never ideally like that but closer in the past) then civility would probably return because there would be a sincerity to the debates that is currently lacking, wherein many points of view are clearly serving some special interest and not any large segment of the voting public.
Ah yes, Tokyo Rove, ever the despicable arrogant vermin.
Who is writing these punch lines but I almost cannot stop laughing on this one.....
You can bet this guy groped a few men in his day.
Who? Chalkboard boy? You’re fired.
And the President should certainly listen to Turd Blossom who has nothing but Trumps best interests at heart.
And with the Turds track record, nobody with any sense is listening to him anyway.
Nobody, and I mean nobody cares what you have to say, chubby, least of all the Donald.
FU bastard of magnificent proportions...
These days, if Karl Rove tells me the sky is blue I check to see for myself. His advice is worthless.
