Back in the day, someone caught red-handed as a killer was summarily executed, or within a week or so. We are so civilized now that the killers either a) are acquitted b) never charged c) deported with nothing in place to prevent future illegal entries or d) 3 hots and a cot for an indeterminate time. And, sometimes, they even get to sue for “damages”! Not quite justice in a cold-blooded murder. And, yes, killing someone when you are willfully drunk, is murder. But, I guess illegals and terrorists don’t understand their actions are wrong so, we need to coddle them. Blech.

That was called "lynching". It was never a good idea. It's indistinguishable from murder.

or within a week or so.

That was called a speedy trial.

But, I guess illegals and terrorists don’t understand their actions are wrong so, we need to coddle them.

That's where the leftists have gone wrong.

Those of us who actually remember the horrors of the XX Century know that even the war criminals of the Third Reich and the Japanese Empire, men who had committed mass murder and mass torture on an epic scale, received fair trials before they were hanged. Why? So the world would know what they had done, and so we would not become what we had just fought to destroy. You throw away the rule of law at your own peril. You declare people to be mere animals, subhuman, unpersons, at your own peril. A Total State, in which the armed agents of the government can declare someone else an "unperson", and summarily kill that "unperson", can do the same to YOU.
