Just heard there are deaths and injuries from this.

Also, heard I-5 was shut down.

This is clearly an act of terrorism.

maintenance problems are unlikely to blame because the incident took place on brand-new tracks, the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity

We have heard from the union rep for the RR maintenance workers' union. "Don't blame us, but we do need a raise.".

These are apparently the same tracks that Antifa sabotaged in April?

From the pictures, it appears that the derailment probably started several dozen (or hundred) yards before the overpass and it got out of control by the time it got to the intersecting road. I wonder what the chances are of a train derailing right at the intersection with a road? I wonder how many hundreds of miles the train passed before derailing so close to an EASY ACCESS POINT?

If a train track were to be sabotaged, I would assume that it would occur several dozen (or hundred) yards off of a road that would allow the criminals easy access and then easy escape after planting the impediment.

Probably a cover story for an incompetent operator, too much speed for the curve.

Looks like the lead engine (white) left the track before crossing the bridge, taking most of the cars with it.

The engine plunged down the embankment all the way to the roadway below, and the cars wadded up against the bridge railing.

The last two cars and the trailing engine (blue) remain on the track, blocking it.

Nothing else is apparent as to cause of the derailment. Could be human error, sabotage, failure in the track, failure in the lead engine, any number of reasons.

Need some close inspection of the track where the lead engine initially left the tracks. And find any loose pieces, where they belong, and where they went. A train wheel off in the woods half a mile away? A piece of rail missing/misaligned?

Also there should be a record of what speed the train was running when it wrecked.

I just drove on I-5 over that exact spot late last night. The graffiti on the overpass makes it easy to remember.

Mayor of one nearby town through which the railroad ran said emphatically in a press interview two weeks ago that there would be an accident because the railroad had not installed all the safety equipment which many thought they should - it’ll be interesting to see what the investigations end up showing......

We need to ban objects, and where a person has a demonstrable need to possess an object, he should have to register it.

The fact that the derailment happened to occur at the crossing point of an interstate highway does suggest sabotage in which the hope was to damage two major transportation arteries and injure more people with a single act.
