To the people he was with as POW, they said he was a traitor.
Known as “songbird” McCain for singing his tune to get preferential treatment.

I know many veterans and not a single one “hates” the guy or criticizes his service or spews that ridiculous communist propaganda about his captivity.

McCain once spoke to my Battalion upon return from one of our deployments to Iraq, and threatened to personally intervene if any of us were to cause trouble regarding gays and lesbians being openly allowed into the military. He was really hung up on fairness to gays and zero tolerance for not going along. He spoke of the need to integrate them all the way to the top.
He praised Obama for his leadership and direction over the DoD.
You could have heard a pin drop. It was certainly no pep-rally.
We were caught off guard. Everyone was happy when he left. The only applause was mechanical as he left, so as not to bring down some unknown/unnecessary wrath.
