Purdue Professor Argues Tough College Courses Reinforce White Privilege
Breitbart ^ | 12 December 2017 | Tom Ciotta

Posted on 12/14/2017 6:07:33 AM PST by jmcenanly

The head of Purdue University’s School of Engineering Education, Donna Riley, argued in a recently published academic journal article tough engineering courses only serves to uphold “white male heterosexual privilege.” According to a report from Campus Reform, Riley, in an astonishing feat of vague postmodern writing, published an article in the most recent issue of the academic journal Engineering Education in which she argued that the concept of academic “rigor” is used as a means to exclude students from marginalized groups from academic communities.

One thing about the wheel is it does best on roads. And being pulled by large domesticated animals like horses, mules, and oxen. When you're on the open prairie and your draft "animals" are dogs, women, and children a travois is an excellent light weight and easy to construct "if it works why replace?" tool.

My son got his Chem E from Purdue in 2015. Purdue has a rigorous academic Engineering program. He worked his butt off for his degree; two semesters of Organic Chemistry is no cake walk. And in his profession, the fluid in the pipe at the chemical plant doesn’t care about the race, gender religion, ethnicity or sexual preference of the person setting the parameters of what’s in that pipe. If the pressure, temperature and flow rate are not correct, the plant blows up and people die. It’s not being racist or bigoted, it’s just doing what it will do. There is a joke among Chemical Engineers; if you see the Chemical Engineer running out of the plant, you want to be in front of him.

My son’s section of commencement was most of the Engineering schools; Chemical, Electrical/Computer, Mechanical, Civil and Nuclear. There were less than 20 American blacks in Civil and Mechanical. None with degrees in Chemical, Electrical/Computer or Nuclear. Looking at the names in the program, there were some African blacks in those programs. Of course, the Electrical/Computer roster read like a Shanghai phone book.

Yes, some people are too stupid to be able to handle math, science, physics and RIGOR! But that is no reason to dumb it down.

Go ahead...I don’t think many technology corporations are looking for majors in Black History, or basket weaving.

No fair comparison.

A degree in basket weaving gives you a skill, even if it is not the most marketable skill these days

A degree in Black History makes you unemployable

In all fairness, I knew a guy who had Master of Fine Arts degree in basket weaving - literally

He became the head of a carbon fiber specialty weaving operation . He was their first employee and he was the only guy they could find with a suitable background even close to what they were trying to do.

He started on the ground floor and built the operation into an impressive business unit

Of course, this was back in the days when a classical liberal arts degree gave you a well rounded, high quality generalist education with a rigorous course of study that taught you how to think independently and learn new things and adapt quickly.

"You don't find no cities in Africa that are 500 years old" is a common theme for his rants,
and I remember one speech that was titled: "Black people never built a seaworthy ship!"

Here is a well known man-of-the cloth who is also a leading democrat, a respected leader of the black "community",
a TV commentator and (obviously) a great scholar and historian of black culture and traditions who disagrees:

If it weren’t for NCAA football, basketball and frat parties, college education would all be online now.

She just got hired by Purdue to head the engineering department. The administration knew who that they were hiring a social justice feminazi. She had written a book on introducing social justice to engineering.

Purdue used to have one of the top engineering schools - no more! Truly sad.

What in the world is the difference between the School of Engineering (I'm reasonably certain that Purdue still has one.) and the School of Engineering Education?

When I was in college, there was a Business Administration, and a Business Education. Business Education was secretarial training.

That's not correct. This bimbo was hired to head the "Engineering Education" department, an entirely different beast. A bit of time with her name and your favorite search engine will reveal the true horror of what Purdue has created.

ROFL!!!

I, myself, asked that very same question a day or two ago. It apparently has something to do with introducing young children to technical subjects ... in an inclusive, non-threatening, gender neutral, LGBTQIAEC+++ friendly, racially unbiased, socially just manner. Or some such thing.

Seriously: Procure a container of your favorite adult beverage. You'll need it. Sit down at your computer, enter her name and 'Purdue" into your favorite search engine. Get ready for a ride on the crazy train.

Yes, some people are too stupid to be able to handle math, science, physics and RIGOR!

Too stupid is an unnecessary insult. Not smart enough or insufficiently intelligent are a bit less demeaning.

Your mileage may vary.

My God. Don’t let this woman anywhere near the actual Engineering Dept.

That would result in un-necessarily dead people. Maybe a lot of them.

Seriously.

Disclaimer: I wanted to go out-of-state to Purdue (engineering), but did not have the $$, and even (my) very good grades were not quite enough to get a scholarship there, at the time. The competition was intense, as it should be. This is not a gripe - I stayed closer to home, worked hard, and got a good education anyway. :-)

It sounds reminiscent of that crazy parody journal article that appeared around 20 yrs ago in the journal “Social Text.” An NYU physics prof wrote a lengthy parody of demented leftard thinking.
