A French Officer who was in debt and an anti-Semite ( the French have been virulent anti-Semites since the Middle Ages, as has most of Europe ), who was in need of money. He sold French secrets to the Germans and when it was found out that "someone" had sold these plans, he blamed Dreyfus.
Fortunately for Dreyfus, Emile Zola went to bat for him and after some years and a whole lot of turmoil, he was freed.
