No, but his allies are running TO the Compost with oppo research and as sources for the takedown. It was a Jeb staffer who did this. It was the GOPe. The Dems, of course, jumped on board and Mitch was all too happy to say, “this one is yours. But see you in a few years.”
So, if McConnell was trying to get Strange elected, why then would he wait to go to the Compost until after the primaries? Your argument makes no sense.
