Having been stationed in Alabama for over 2 years back in the early 70’s, I’m guessing that most of the people there have either a mother or grandmother who was a teenager at the time of her marriage. Girls at 13 could marry with parental permission, and 16 without permission. I knew a lot of locals and a number of GI’s who were married to girls ranging in age from 13 to 17. I grew up in Texas, and my oldest sister got engaged when she was 16. A lot of the girls I went to school with dropped out and married as soon as they turned 16.

My paternal grandmother was married at 17 and my paternal great grandmother was married at 15. They were from England and New York state.
