The Don JR./Wikileaks email could very easily be part of a ‘sting’. The date was intentionally seeded as incorrect. The resulting story is fake. The leak, however, is real.
Each nugget of disinformation exposes a specific leaker. Each trail used in the sharing of that disinformation exposes the enabling media. The White Hat plants the fake news seed, and then watches to see where, when, how, to-whom, and from-whom, it shows up.

That is one way to catch the leakers. Give each suspected leaker different information and see what comes out. If the leak said Sept 1, it was person X. If the leak said Sept 4, it was person Y.
But I don’t know that this method could work in this particular case - the House members could very easily cross check their documents. Something this “explosive” would raise eyebrows and they would discuss it among themselves and their legal aides and surely someone would notice that they each had different set of documents. In the case of secure document viewing someone would have to change out the document each time a new House member went to view it to pull this off. Not sure how doable that would be.
