Rep. John Conyers on Tuesday announced his retirement from Congress while in a Michigan hospital bed, saying he is endorsing his son, John Conyers III, for the seat he has held for more than a half century amid growing sexual-misconduct allegations.
“I’m retiring today,” the 88-year-old Michigan Democrat said in a phone interview with a local radio station from a Detroit hospital, where he has been since last month after experiencing chest pains. “I want everyone to know how much I appreciate [their] support.”
Conyers, the longest-serving congressman, made the decision two weeks after sexual harassment allegations first surfaced and after returning last week to his Detroit-area district to discuss his political future with family and advisers.
The most recent accusations surfaced Monday and allege Conyers slid his hand up a woman’s skirt and rubbed her thighs while they sat next to each other in church during a service more than a decade ago.
The latest accusation comes amid mounting claims and after Conyers was hospitalized.
He made his announcement Tuesday on Praise 102.7’s “The Mildred Gaddis Show.”
Conyers’ endorsement of his son was unexpected, considering his great-nephew, Ian Conyers, a Michigan state senator, said earlier that Conyers would not seek re-election in 2018, instead of retiring, and that he would run for the open seat.

That would take a Constitutional Amendment. In other words, ain’t happening.
The problem is the voters not the recipient of the votes. Conyer’s district has got to have the lowest IQ of any in the nation. Not to mention being one of the most corrupt.

WASHINGTON — John Conyers III, who was endorsed by his father on Tuesday to succeed him in the House, was arrested in February after his girlfriend suffered knife cuts during an argument.
Mr. Conyers, in an interview Wednesday, tried to head off a possibly disqualifying scandal just a day after his father resigned from Congress amid multiplying allegations of sexual harassment. As issues of sexual harassment and abuse roil Washington, any violent altercation against a woman could doom his effort to take the seat that his father held since 1965.
The younger Mr. Conyers said that the couple began arguing around 3 a.m. the day after Valentine’s Day and that after a physical fight, police arrested him on suspicion of domestic violence.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office later dropped the charges, but the girlfriend got a restraining order against Mr. Conyers, which remains in effect until March of next year, he said.
“She says I stabbed her, which makes no sense,” Mr. Conyers, 27, said. “I didn’t do this. She and I had a verbal altercation and that escalated. She pulled the knife on me. She was chasing me. I tried to take it from her. There was a struggle. I pinned her to the wall. She kept swinging and she cut herself.”

Democratic Congressman John Conyers says he’s learned that his son inappropriately used a government vehicle in Detroit and plans to reimburse the Treasury for any non-official use.
The House Judiciary Committee chairman says in a statement Tuesday the vehicle was used during the Thanksgiving holiday. The 81-year-old congressman apologized and says he’ll make sure it won’t happen again.
The statement was issued after WJBK-TV in Detroit reported a theft from the 2010 Cadillac Escalade, which is registered in the name of Conyers’ congressional district.
A Detroit police report says 20-year-old John Conyers III reported two laptops worth $1,100 each and $27,500 worth of concert tickets stolen from the parked vehicle late Wednesday or early Thursday.
There was no listed telephone number in Detroit for Conyers’ son.

Actually, it’s one of the few districts in the US that come close to fitting within the county itself (Wayne County). On gerrymandering rankings....it’s probably near the bottom fifty of all districts.
