North Korean nuclear tests sickening residents with 'ghost disease,' defectors say

North Koreans who defected but once lived near a nuclear testing site in the rogue nation now believe they are experiencing the dangerous effects of exposure to harmful radiation — and it's triggered severe health problems, according to a report published Sunday.

"So many people died we began calling it 'ghost disease,'" Lee Jeong Hwa, who in 2010 escaped her home in Kilju County where the nuclear testing site Punggye-ri is located, told NBC News. "We thought we were dying because we were poor and we ate badly. Now we know it was the radiation."

Lee isn’t the only defector who believes the radiation is taking its toll on people who lived there.

South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported in November that close to two dozen defectors said the area surrounding Punggye-ri is turning into a “wasteland” where vegetation is dying and babies are born with deformities.

...that Lil Kim is getting ready to try again with the testing - and perhaps in open air.

I’m surprised there’s not been reports of this before now.

It's likely Kim's most recent bomb was too big for the mountain. Maybe the tunnel wasn't deep enough.

From the Wikipedia on the test site:

2017 tunnel collapse[edit]

On 1 November 2017, Japanese TV station TV Asahi reported that according to unconfirmed reports, several underground tunnels collapsed at the test site on 10 October 2017.[14] An initial collapse was said to have killed 100 workers, with another 100 rescuers killed in a second collapse.[15][16] A 17 October 2017 study published by the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University suggested the most recent test had caused "substantial damage to the existing tunnel network under Mount Mantap".[17][18] On 30 October 2017, in testimony before the South Korean parliament, the director of South Korea's Meteorological Administration warned that "further tests at Punggye-ri could cause the mountain to collapse and release radioactivity into the environment."[18] Likewise, Chinese scientists warned that if the mountain collapsed, nuclear fallout could spread across "an entire hemisphere."[18]

From the Wikipedia on the most recent test (on 3 September):

On 13 September, an analysis of before and after synthetic-aperture radar satellite imagery of the test site was published suggesting the test occurred under 900 metres (3,000 ft) of rock and the yield "could have been in excess of 300 kilotons".[22]

This might explain KJI’s aggressiveness. His people are dying off, he knows he won’t be able to hold on to power much longer. Desperation makes people do stupid things.

Thanks...Yes, I should have been more specific.

I was referring to the effects of radiation on the people in the large areas surrounding the ongoing testing.

If indeed their are birth defects it probably has been been occurring for some time.

Of course I would guess there are not a lot of Norks who are successful in defecting.

The nuclear test mountain is literally shattered geologically. Dangerous levels of radioactivity are being passed into the air and water running down the mountain. It’s pretty easy to figure out unless you’re an oppressed citizen of a monstrous dictatorship.

China’s reaction (or non-reaction) would certainly be different if the prevailing winds in North Korea were NOT away from China as they are.

"...At least the Soviets evacuated Pripyat...."

In the Chernobyl area, only the ethnic Russians were evacuated. The ethnic Tatars were left in place, apparently.
