Unfortunately, it’s simpler than that. Conyers is old, not much time left. Franken is young(er), and the left thinks he has some upward potential. So, make Conyers the sacrificial lamb, presto change-o, they get to keep Franken because Conyers’ resignation becomes the story.
Whenever Franken sees Conyers on the Senate floor he walks on the other side.

Mr. Franken is...uhmmm...of a certain kind of white persuasion, so that while Mr. Conyers represents the Democratic Party base, Mr. Franken represents...how shall we say...the donor class. Watching Dems and libs eat their own is a special kind of fun, I must say.

While some CBC members may want to draw attention to how black lawmakers facing sexual misconduct allegations are treated differently — particularly when the accusers are white — some may ultimately join their party leadership in concluding that it would be in everyone's best interest if Conyers resigned.
