During an advanced screening of his new movie, the celebrated black actor Denzel Washington was asked by the Grio whether blacks, in particular, can "truly makes change as things are right now."
With no hesitation, Washington stated:
It starts in the home[.] ... If the father is not in the home the boy will find a father in the streets. I saw it in my generation and every generation before me, and every one since. If the streets raise you, then the judge becomes your mother and prison becomes your home.
Speaking specifically about the American prison complex to the New York Daily News, Mr. Washington repeated his assertions:
It starts with how you raise your children. If a young man doesn't have a father figure, he'll go find a father figure. So you know I can't blame the system…It's unfortunate that we make such easy work for them.
This is nothing new for the two-time Oscar-winner. Washington made similar comments in a GQ interview in 2012. When asked what he would say to African-American readers of GQ, Washington responded:
Take responsibility. One of the things that saddens me the most about my people is fathers that don't take care of their sons and daughters. And you can't blame that on The Man or getting frisked. Take responsibility. Look in the mirror and say, "What can I do better?" There is opportunity; you can make it. ... Keep the body in tune – it's your temple. All things in moderation. Continue to search. That's the best part of life for me – continue to try to be the best man.

I think I read somewhere that he was a preacher’s kid, had his time of rebellion, then woke up.
If the father is not in the home the boy will find a father in the streets.
I saw it in my generation and every generation before me, and every one since.
If the streets raise you, then the judge becomes your mother and prison becomes your home. - - Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington - PLEASE GO TALK TO NFL OWNERS... TELL THEM THE TRUTH...ASK THEM TO HELP THE BLACK COMMUNITY IN A WAY THAT REALLY WILL HELP... SUPPORT THE TWO-PARENT BLACK FAMILY....
No, he is at risk for being blackballed, being called an Uncle Tom, etc. of course, hes too big to care.
Which can be done but is less than optimal and not to be held as any kind of standard.
In general, children need fathers, and growing up with a father who doesn't care or who decides to run out on a child is devastating.
Oh, that can and does happen. Takes a very strong woman. They deserve all the praise in the world. Statistically though kids raised without both parents are far less likely to succeed in the world.
Denzel has always been a fav. Good head on his shoulders.
He’s always been stand up. And he donates to building homes for veterans.
I always admired his work on-screen. Now I admire him all the more for his courage. I’m sure the libtards in Hollyweird and elsewhere will attempt to skewer him for speaking the naked truth. The libtard way is to excuse people from any responsibility for misbehavior and to then come up with justifications and excuses by the dozen for it. Then, they attempt to apply some technological solution to prevent that problem from happening again instead of changing the base human behavior causing it.
Tell that to Clarence Thomas"
And Bill Cosby.
Dang, I’m gonna start watching some of Denzel’s movies!
More prominent blacks must start saying this if the situation is EVER going to change as nothing a whitey says will EVER be listened to by young black males.
Notwithstanding any of the foregoing, the Dems will NEVER fall into line because a downtrodden black person IS their power base and all of us with a brain know this!

Cursed be the ground. For our sake. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth
For us. For out of the ground we were taken for the dust we are. And to the dust we shall return.

The Plantation masters at the DNC will go after him in the same way they went after Bill Cosby.
‘Dang, Im gonna start watching some of Denzels movies!”
I highly recommend “Flight.”
Denzel Washington, epitomizes ‘class act’.
great quote.
You completely misunderstand the dynamic.
His skin color only provides cover when he advocates for progressive values.
Washington’s statements here are anti-progressive, so he is at greater risk and therefore his courage in making the statements is authentic.
The sistahs are going to have a hard time with this one. After swooning over him for decades, they can’t turn on him now, can they?
He will probably get the Bill Cosby treatment.
You're right on this reasonisfaith... Washington's shown great courage here...
Nice to hear this. His colleagues will not be happy.
