Trump backs bipartisan fixes to ObamaCare markets
The Hill ^ | 11/28/2017 | Jessie Hellmann

President Trump told Republican senators Tuesday he supports two bipartisan efforts to stabilize ObamaCare's insurance markets.

Trump, during a luncheon on Capitol Hill, said he supports a bill proposed by Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.), that would continue key ObamaCare insurer payments.

He also said he supports a bill proposed by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) that would set up a reinsurance fund to help insurers cover higher-cost individuals.

"He said he supports Alexander-Murray. He said, more importantly, he supports Collins-Nelson... which has widespread bipartisan support," Alexander told reporters after the lunch.

Collins, who has opposed the GOP Senate tax bill's repeal of ObamaCare's individual mandate, has met with the president in recent days about her concerns.

Asked if she were feeling more optimistic about the tax reform bill, she said: "That is a fair assessment because I believe a lot of my concerns it appears are going to be addressed."

Collins said Trump understands the "need to have something to offset the premium increases" that would occur from repealing the individual mandate and "appeared very open to the combination of Alexander-Murray and Collins-Nelson."

Collins said she, GOP leadership and members of the Finance Committee also met Tuesday to talk about passing the two proposals.

I think many conservatives have underestimated the staying power of the Swamp. They will not give up easily. They are deeply entrenched, have myriad government resources at their disposal, have access to lots of money, and they have lots of useful allies including the media.

Eradicating the Swamp is a pipe dream. But I do give Trump credit for exposing them for what they are.

I think passionate Trump supporters need to accept the reality that - before 2015 - Donald Trump was a center-right Democrat on almost every major political issue.

>>>So instead of the Obamacare repeal tre will be an expansion of it...<<<

Without the mandate? That's all the difference in the world.

The mandate is everything. Why else do you think Obama and the Democrats pushed so hard for it, and have been howling so much at the prospect of its removal? Because the mandate is critical to propping up the Obamacare house of cards.

Make no mistake: if the mandate goes, consumers end up with decent options again—based on competition—and Obamacare collapses and dies under its own unsustainable weight...

yep

real low cost catastrophic insurance for young people will eliminate the programs proposed here. The proposed programs seem to be in effect interim insurance for the transition period

hahahah. My outrage isn’t against Trump. Trump was the ONLY voice a few months ago saying, ok, let’s just repeal it. Where was Cruz supporting him, out every day on “the shows” saying Trump is absolutely right? Trump knows something has to get done and is willing to negotiate. If he had partners in the Repuke camp he wouldn’t go with the Dems at all. Trump is the ONLY thing good about the Repuke party right now.

“I deem this FAKE NEWS. Trump wants Obamacare GONE.”

How do you just decide something is fake? Everyone who was in the room acknowledges what he said.

“I deem it fake news when it does not match Trump’s promises. You have to remember that all those ‘in the room’ are the enemedia and that they collude among themselves to tell lies.”

There was no media in the room. It was the Senate GOP lunch, and it was the various GOP Senators that reported what he said.

And your definition of “fake news” is ridiculous. Trump is not infallible, and is completely capable of changing his position on any number of things.
