He was a strange duck. It is rumored he knew the Japanese were going to hit Pearl and did nothing about it because it was going to bolster a dead economy. And he was just waiting to ride in on the white horse in Europe for that one so we were late getting in.
Roosevelt knew of the possible Pearl attack from stealing messages and was controlling the Japanese by threatening to cut off their oil as we were their only source. So the Japanese took over the oil rich Dutch East-Indies and British Malaya in 1941, giving them an unending amount of natural resources, and chose to go after the US at Pearl as they knew we wouldn’t allow that. But we were foolish to put all our eggs in one basket. Roosevelt had been questioned by his officers as to putting so much there. He wanted to scare the Japanese. Guess he miscalculated.
