Conservatives want PROOF of wrongdoing, not ^{new and unproven claims of} 40 year old unproven claims ^abuses . And evidence of criminality. And, perhaps, if the action is immoral but not illegal, some notion that the individual is impenitent.

And perhaps it would help if the claimed 40-yo abuses were unambiguously inherently immoral rather than legal, if tacky, under substantively similar circumstances. A speeding ticket is inherently in that category, for example, if you’re not talking a ten mph, and at least 20%, margin of violation.
