Lived there for fourteen years, but all of it Syracuse and points south. Used to go to Fourth Lake for family vacations. Those roads aren’t like the straight-to-the-horizon roads you get in western states.
I lived in Michigan where you could draw a line from Muskegon to Saginaw and civilization pretty much ended north of that. Everybody leadfooted it through the boonies. My in-laws hail from a town on the U.P. that’s a 14 hour drive from Detroit.
