I believe that if you remember this girl and remember that she was a friend, you remember that you were interested in her in that way enough to have kissyface dates with her over a period of months.
So I believe he DOES remember whether this teen friend he had for months in his thirties was a romantic friend. And he is not being honest about his memory. Which doesn’t serve him well.
