There's No Such Thing as an "American" Homicide Rate
von Mises Institute ^ | 11/09/2017 | Ryan McMaken

Posted on 11/10/2017 4:18:26 AM PST by x1stcav

We often hear about homicides are rampant in "America" — presumably caused by high levels of private gun ownership — but any serious look at the numbers forces us to refine our question and instead ask why some parts of the US have some of the lowest homicide rates on earth, while the situation in other areas is considerably different.

What Libresco did conclude, was that a host of societal issues are driving much of what we hear about in terms of so-called gun violence. Mental illness, suicide, gang violence, and domestic violence are all important factors that drive gun violence. The problem, Libresco admits, is that simply prohibiting certain types of guns doesn't really address these issues.

Some very interesting comparative statistics for both the US and Canada.

‘Societal’ issues play a very determinant role in how high the murder rate is is an area.

There’s a world of difference between gun ownership and gun possession. Gangbangers don’t own guns, they possess stolen guns that defeat our systems of detection and control. But, no one will address that because it might stigmatize our little darling minorities.

Liars lump when it suits them, and split-hairs when it suits them. It’s why latinos are classified as whites in national crime statistics.

Why is it no one ever talks about the cultural nature of violence? The way I look at it, it’s not that violence in America compared to violence in Europe is better or worse, it’s different.
If you take the worst year of gun violence in America, which is about 50,000 deaths, and keep that number static for every year since 1900, throw in every American killed in every war from then until now you wouldn’t even come close to the body count racked up in Europe during the same period.
So in the American model of violence there is an ongoing levl of small incidents. Someone from Texas gets into a fight from someone from Oklahoma, they pull out their pistols, one or both of them gets fatally wounded, arrests are made and it’s pretty much the end of it. In the European model of violence the disputes are less frequent but instead of 2 men getting into a fight Texas raises an army invades Oklahoma and thousands of people on both sides who had nothing to do with the original argument end up as casualties.
Personally, I prefer no violence at all but if I have to choose I’ll take the American model to the European one.

There is an African American homicide rate and there is an American homicide rate. Unrelated to one another.

The problem, Libresco admits, is that simply prohibiting certain types of guns doesn't really address these issues.

Nor is there the slightest intent of gun control advocates to address these issues. The goal of every anti-gunner to quote the late and unlamented former mayor of Atlanta, Maynard Jackson - a member of the board of directors of Handgun Control Inc, "We want a country where only the military and police are armed."

Anti-gunners cannot be bargained with, and they cannot be reasoned with. They never give up and they're never satisfied. They will only rest when every last gun and every last bullet is confiscated* from the citizenry and we live in a police state that would make North Korea or Stalin's Russia look like bastions of freedom. (Or alternatively enough of them and their jackbooted thugs collect bullets in a way that they didn't intend.)

*I can never understand why when some private individual steals something from you it's called "theft," but when a government performs exactly the same action it's called "confiscation."

There is also an urban murder rate and a suburban/rural rate. Even in a city, the murders are usually concentrated is a very small area.

In Chicago, over the last 4-5 years, 70-90% of VICTIMS have criminal records. It bears no relation to what happens in rural counties.

Yeah, that’s what I was referring to when I cited ‘societal’ issues.

“There is an African American homicide rate and there is an American homicide rate. Unrelated to one another.”

According to the FBI’s 2016 Uniform Crime Report for 2016, 60.1% of all homicides are committed by blacks. (12.6% of the population) Specifically, the vast majority of these are committed by black males aged 13-35, which is roughly 4% of the US population.

I saw a movie about that. It was called "Schindler's List."

mostly, the rate of violence of all kinds is directly related to the number of blacks living in any given area. It’s really not hard to figure out, just politically incorrect to do so.

One interesting thing to do is compare Canadian provinces with the US states that immediately border them. Quebec has very strict licencing and it’s own registry for all firearms, yet has murder rates identical to that of Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire and those (especially Vermont) have very casual firearms laws as a contrast. Vermont has never required a permit to carry a handgun open or concealed and is one of the least violent places in the West.

When one backs Detroit’s black on black violent crime (including homicide), you would likely have Michigan’s homicide rate not terribly dissimilar to that of Ontario’s. You could probably reach similar results with Wisconsin (by backing out Milwaukee’s black violent crime) and Minnesota (with the Twin Cities’ black violence as well). Other states like North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Washington (excluding Seattle’s black violence) have rates quite similar to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. And again, these are more states with fairly permissive laws compared to certain other areas of the United States.

Very astute analysis. Concur.

Anti-gunners cannot be bargained with, and they cannot be reasoned with.

No fanatic can be reasonable. Of any ilk. Fags. Druggies. Commies. Etc. They're committed verging on insanity. Actually, any of the above issues involving liberals already cross the line into insanity.

Our problem is that insanity is celebrated in this country. We even elect them to office and let them make decisions on our behalf.

I think we’re all coming to the same conclusion as to what the ‘problem’ is down here.

Eliminate the blacks and latino murderers and the US is probably one of the safest areas on the planet.

A very valid point I have tried to promote in the past.

Deserves much stronger support and wider recognition.
