There is a good possibility these smears are from McConnel and GOPe.
Paul Ryan really wanted hillary to win so he could lead from her behind, and he specifically state this. He knew that a Trump win would place St. Pauli Girl Ryan in a difficult position of having to actually perform. He was much more comfortable with hillary’s behind.
Mconnel already used a smear campaign against Roy Moore.
