Days after Republicans suffered electoral defeats up and down the ballot in Virginia, Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, announced he will not seek reelection next year.
After much contemplation and prayer, the 13-term congressman said in a statement that he and his wife decided the time was right for him to step aside.
With my time as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee ending in December 2018, he said, this is a natural stepping-off point and an opportunity to begin a new chapter of my career and spend more time with my family, particularly my granddaughters.
Term limits bar him from serving another term as chairman of the influential committee; he was previously chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.
Goodlatte, the most senior Republican in the Virginia congressional delegation, is known as a serious student of policy in Washington who keeps a close watch over state and local GOP politics.
He made news earlier this year when his plan to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics prompted public outcry and critical tweets from Trump

The VA political map is a sea of red with blue dots all over it. Like almost every other state.
He should’a been term limited out eleven terms ago. Then he could have run for senate, done that twice if he won, then returned to his civilian occupation living under the laws he helped pass.

What are you talking about ? VA-6 is a heavily GOP district. Goodlatte won 67-33% over his Democrat opponent in 2016.
Trump won with 63% in this district.
At least 12 terms too late. Loser.
