“professor” was the term used in the 20’s for the guy who played the piano in a whore house, hence: play it again Sam.

When I was a lad, someone called my doctor “professor” one time in general conversation. (My doc had been a major in Patton’s medical corps in N. Africa.) Anyway, he damn near jumped down the guys throat saying: don’t ever call me professor. That was how I learned about the other use of the term.
