So, heard today journalists pronouncing it Knee- jair instead of Niger, like Tiger.

Is this going the same way as Pock-ee-stan?

I have always heard it pronounced with a soft g as nye-jur.

iirc, it started on a RAT radio program cause it's more PC, yet, they don't pronounce Nigeria that way...
