Reagan wanted his friend Paul Laxalt, the former Governor of Nevada. He was pressured into accepting Bush in order to keep the support of GOP “moderates” who were not happy at having Reagan as their candidate.
Reagan was told the party would not work for his election unless he picked Bush. Then they (and Bush) tried to murder him.
Trump knows very well they will murder him if they can.
