Wasn’t urine used in some gas masks in WWI?

Yes they did, but we aren’t talking about what essentially amounts to a moist towel to cover your face here. The compliment to comparison is contrast. Burning tree sap was once used to sink ships, but times change.

During first gas (chlorine) attacks, before gas masks were
issued, troops would urinate on pieces of cloth and hold
them over mouth and nose to breathe

The ammonia in urine neutralizing the chlorine
