Just half of Massachusetts students meet MCAS test expectations

Just half of Massachusetts students in grades three through eight met or exceeded expectations on the new "next generation MCAS test" in math and English — the first time the test has been administered.

Massachusetts education officials released the spring 2017 test results on Wednesday.

Educators were quick to caution against making direct comparisons between a student's performance on the new test and the original, nearly 20-year-old, MCAS.

Scoring for the new test falls into four categories: Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations and Not Meeting Expectations.

As a result, some students who scored "proficient" on last year's MCAS test may find they only scored "partially meeting expectations" on the new, tougher exam.

"We're establishing a new baseline so comparisons with the past are difficult," said state Education Secretary James Peyser. "They really are apples and oranges."

The new hybrid exam mixes elements of the familiar Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test with another test aligned with federal Common Core state standards known as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers — or PARCC — test, which was developed by a national consortium that includes Massachusetts.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted in 2015 instead to combine the two exams to create a "next-generation, computer-based, and Massachusetts-specific test."

I have always said that this State is home to the biggest Idiots in the nation.

It was up to the Libs to prove it... and they have.

“They said the fact that about half of those students who took the test scored below the new “meeting expectations” level will only add to calls for more standardized testing in schools.”

The solution is simple. Make the test easier. Keep making it easier until you get the results you want.

Black students and BLM groups in Massachusetts expended money and incredible energy to ensure that black students could wear long braided hair on sports teams, even though it was a hazard to safety.

But they cannot be bothered about black students who cannot read or perform even the most basic math functions.

You cannot overcome the Bell Curve. It will assert itself no matter how many billions your spend.

Testing should be eliminated. It could stigmatize the “Not Meeting Expectations” group and trigger them.

Just give them all a participation trophy and send them home. And double the teachers’ salaries for achieving equality of outcome.

“And double the teachers’ salaries for achieving equality of outcome.”

Now that is funny. And sad because it so true.

""We're establishing a new baseline so comparisons with the past are difficult," said state Education Secretary James Peyser. "They really are apples and oranges."

What is interesting if I remember correct is this. My brilliant State Senator in MI Pat Colbeck was trying to get MI to adopt MA pre-No Child left Behind Standards ( and methodology of teaching? ) they were that good. Let's not get into how the EGOP here in MI put the screws to him last week, but let that go. I wonder if "comparisons with the past are difficult" are hearkening back to When the State of MA's numbers did mean something of which Pat was trying to convince MI to adopt...

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
