McCain crashed (or ejected from) 4 US Navy aircraft.
He earned his Cold War reputation by getting shot down by the North Vietnamese earn his fifth victory and his ace. One of the very, very few in the Vietnam era to be credited with five victories. Er, American losses.
his grandfather was a 4-star admiral as well.
