3.3 million out of 5.7 million Russian prisoners of war died in German captivity. The Geneva Convention requires signatories to follow the rules of the convention even with prisoners from nations that are not signatories of the convention. Germany was in clear violation of the Geneva Convention in their dealings with Russian prisoners of war. The Russians made no pretext of following the Geneva Convention. The West German Government estimates that 3,060,000 Germans were captured by Soviet Forces during the war. Of that figure 1,094,000 died in Russian captivity.
I was not aware that SHAEF had planned an invasion of the Soviet Union, with Patton in command.
I’ve read that of the 200K Axis troops captured in Stalingrad, only 5K were ever seen again (ten years later).
And those who did manage to get back to Russia, were either killed by Stalin or sent to the Gulags.
