at what 300 miles at a charge? 10 days to drive across the country? Geez, that is a real lesson in efficiency.

That is not true unless you have on older Tesla S with lifetime free charging or the very high end Tesla S that costs in excess of $100K. The model 3 will get somewhere around 4 free fill-ups per year and then charge a modest fee to use the super charging stations.

Free Supercharger use was a loss-leader type sales promotional gimmick for the early model cars. Model’s S and X are limited to 400 kWh before charges apply. 400 kWh—your mileage will decrease with AC or heater.
