A global tipping point for electric cars could come as early as 2022, as battery costs decrease and concerns about range and infrastructure ease. Thats from analysts at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, who in a little over a years time have turned even more optimistic about the future dominance of electric cars over internal-combustion vehicles. In a Tuesday note, the analysts forecast that one in three cars will be purely electric by 2030; their July 2016 prediction was one in 10 by the same year. There are several factors converging that have led us to revise our thinking a combination of changing customer preferences, increasingly viable product, regulation, and infrastructure, they said in the note.

The gap is diminishing. Just a matter of time. As noted above, I’ve heard comparable complaints regarding a wide range of industries - seen many go from “X can’t come close to competing with Y” to Y being literally relegated to museums while everyone uses X daily.
Electric cars of the future are going to be awesome. I'm not going to miss my old gas-burning vehicles. Right now they're still gimmicky but the technology is rapidly approaching where electric vehicles are just going to make sense over petroleum.
I've practically replaced all my corded power tools with batteries and I've never looked back. Once the power is there, I'll do the same with my lawn equipment. It's quite probable that the 2015 Tacoma I'm currently driving will be the last gas-powered vehicle I ever own.
“People dabbling in bad technology will leave more gasoline for people like me that need real transportation.”
Until that “bad technology” becomes the norm and your supply becomes rare.
Where do you buy ink ribbons for your typewriter? film for a camera? I use maybe 2 stamps a year, haven’t used checks at all in 2017, see zero TV commercials, can’t find a pay phone and don’t have a quarter to put in it, etc point made. Get ready for the real possibility that gasoline might suddenly be hard to come by in your lifetime, if not in a decade.
There needs to be a technological breakthrough on reducing recharge times to a reasonable level. There isn’t even one on the horizon. I will know it when I see it.
BS. There are plenty of liberals, including this article's author, claiming that and plenty more demanding it.
In fact, FR just had a thread on the subject of banning cars: UK Government To Ban Sale of Petrol Cars By 2040
“but your comment above shows you do do not know what you are talking about. “
Obviously your comment above shows you do do not know what you are talking about.
“Home solar power costs about half the price of the car youd power with it.”
Just more BS from you. Home solar costs $40,000 for a 7KW setup. It is also absurd to think people will charge their cars at night when they are home.
Just how stupid are you??
“Nothing will replace push rods and pistons - NEVER!”
Overhead cams and pitons.
“Once the power is there, I’ll do the same with my lawn equipment. “
One step ahead .. just got the Kobolt 80v mower.
“Dont call the Tesla S a cute little car. That sedan is one of the fastest production cars in the world!”
Still acute car since it is just a toy with little utility beyond a quick sprint and a few miles range.
“There needs to be a technological breakthrough on reducing recharge times to a reasonable level. There isnt even one on the horizon. I will know it when I see it.”
95% of the charging is done at home while you sleep.
Tesla charging stations will give you 200 miles in 20 minutes.
OK sport, just what high performance cars have you owned lately? What is your driving skill level?
“Tesla 3 with a 300+ mile range.”
Claimed, not actual.
Nothing wrong with electric vehicles for those who want them. There’s even a legitimate case to be made that they should be mandatory in dense urban areas.
But, Teslas in competition with other cars IN THE SAME PRICE RANGE, have little to recommend them aside from virtue signaling or special urban need. Vehicles in the $70k-$140 range are all stunning.
Even the much slower and cheaper Model 3 Tesla at a typical $45k is in the sweet spot for ‘sports sedans’ by everyone from the Alfa-Romeo Giulia to Volvo S60 T6.
Lets have a 600 mile race. You get Tesla and I get a Corvette. Who is going to win?
” EVs actually make our power infrastructure more efficient.”
Until that infrastructure becomes saturated, then it fails and the costs exponentially increase to increase capacity.
Electricity is only cheap since few are using it.
Zero also had his Nazi EPA closing coal fired electricity producing plants by the hundreds.
“Still acute car since it is just a toy with little utility beyond a quick sprint and a few miles range.”
It has the full utility of a family sedan and has a posted range of over 250 miles. One owner got 560 miles so Tesla set up a test and got 670 miles!
“strange how many people seem to think EVs are being forced upon everyone.”
That’s the idea of the liberals. You cannot deny it unless you’re just the resident liberal propagandist for EV cars.
We’ve had a few propagandists selling the idea here.
“Electricity is only cheap since few are using it.”
Come out of your cave, already! EVERYONE IS USING ELECTRICITY!
It won’t be until the 2040’s that the electric car recharging infrastructure will be common enough to finally replace the gasoline-powered car.
