Because it sounds like the curse word.

But I don’t think that’s how it’s correctly pronounced. I believe it is FOOOKS

There is a “y” sound in it,like the word “futile”.

In my home town there was a older lady named Minie Fuchs.

We all pronounced it Foooks, as she preferred. No one made fun of her name by referring to the cuss word.

Homesteaders tried to “Americanize” there names to sorta fit how they would be pronounced in English. My granddad’s name was Neumann, pronounced Nie Man. He changed the spelling to Neuman and pronounced in New Man. I suspect the same happened to the Fuchs name.

Imagine today, our Mexican buddies flooding across the border wanting to “Amerianize” themselves.
