TITANS TIDBITS:
• Matthews’ father, Andre, is a retired U.S. Marine Corps master sergeant.
• In October 2015, Matthews’ half-brother Christopher Ruiz was killed
while serving as a retired Marine working as a private defense contractor in
Afghanistan. Ruiz served in the Marines for 10 years, and served overseas
in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was in Afghanistan training locals to fight
for their country, when he was killed. Ruiz was one of six U.S. Airmen and
five other civilian contractors killed in the crash of an Air Force C-130 as it
tried to put down at the Jalalabad Airfield on Oct. 2.
• Matthews wears a bracelet with the words “Forever by my side.” It has
his fallen brother’s name on it, along with the Marines logo. He wears the
bracelet every day.

Rishard originally signed a letter of intent committing to the University of Oregon.[2] Matthews attended Bakersfield College before transferring to the University of Nevada, Reno. In his two years catching passes from Colin Kaepernick at Nevada he had 147 receptions for 2,243 yards and 13 touchdowns. While at Nevada, Matthews was named second-team all-WAC as a wide receiver in 2011. In 2012, he was an honors candidate who was named to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top receiver.[3]
