A descendant of Christopher Columbus penned an op-ed published Monday defending Columbus's legacy.
In the op-ed published in USA Today titled "Hey America, my ancestor didn't cause your failings" Christopher Columbus XX wrote that history has some "truly evil people," but his ancestor is "not one of them."
"Most often, history is not made up of perfect people and evil ones, but of complex people who must be understood in context," he wrote.
"What is happening at the hands of Columbus detractors is political, not historical. As his direct descendant and namesake, I should know." "What is happening at the hands of Columbus detractors is political, not historical. As his direct descendant and namesake, I should know."
Columbus XX wrote that blaming his ancestor for everything that went wrong when two cultures met for the first time in 1492 "hides the truth about him" and "obscures the great things that the countries of the American hemisphere have accomplished."
Columbus XX said Columbus did "something incredible" by reaching the Bahamas on board three small ships.
"Those who now question Columbus conveniently ignore the fact that slavery, cannibalism, warfare and even human sacrifice all existed in the Americas before he even sailed," he wrote.
"Even so, some today blame Columbus for everything they dislike in U.S. history, despite the ample evidence that he was a moderating force on his men, and the fact that he sought to keep good manners and friendly relations with Native Americans."
Columbus XX continued to tout the accomplishments of his ancestor, saying blaming Columbus "does his legacy a terrible injustice" and focuses people's anger "on the wrong man."
He argued that an "all-or-nothing view of history polarizes everything."

GO INDIANS Indigenous Peoples of Cleveland!
Hope we beat the New York Yankees White Colonial Imperialists tonight.
We were the colony, not the imperialists. I wonder how many people under the age of 40 even know that we were the colony.

The term “Clovis people” comes from a set of spear (flint) points that were found originally in Clovis, New Mexico. (If I remember this right!) These points have been found elsewhere in North America, what makes them very interesting is they are very very similar to points found at early man sites (I think Cromagnon & not Neanderthal, but I may be wrong!) in Europe. Normally in archeology how you track the geographic spread of a culture is look for what they leave behind - cultural artifacts. In this case similar spear points, if you think about flint snapping, the skill necessary to learn it, not an unreasonable approach. I think the European culture was called Soultrean, so if real then Europeans got her first from the west, not Asian tribes from the east and it occurred much much earlier then is commonly accepted. Unfortunately no human remains have been found associated with these sites that I know of.

BINGO!
Columbus Day is perpetually overlooked as an opportune time to discuss Islamic jihad through the centuries. Spain invested in Christopher Columbus who took enormous personal risk to find an alternate sailing route to the Indies. Why? To avoid the Islamic piracy which was bankrupting European merchants pursuing trade throughout the Mediterranean.
Columbus Day provides a golden opportunity to teach the history of battling Islamic hegemony.
It's no wonder the left is concentrating on delegitimizing Christopher Columbus' milestone achievements.
The words used to describe the shape of the earth in the quran are :
All are synonyms for flat in arabic no where in the quran does it say or hint that the world is a sphere and when you ask a sheikh why does God use all the words for flat to describe Earth he just say's "Oh it's just metaphorical"
That’s exactly what was argued before the city council - to add a day instead of deleting a holiday, because Columbus Day is celebrated by Italian Americans, honoring one of their heroes.
City Council was having none of it and the Columbus Day holiday was deleted.
I know we were the Colony but there where also imperialist living here too. They left when we kicked them out.
Maybe you should go get another cup of coffee and loosen up a bit FRiend. We're all fighting on the same team and thhe same cause here.
the original op-ed was posted earlier, but got nuked, I think because of the source (USA Today).
Happy Columbus Day....
Yep, all the names that are going to have to be changed. Like the capital city of Ohio.
We need one of those Willy Wonka memes.
"So, you think the U.S. should have open borders."
...........{pic of Gene Wilder as Wonka}..........
"How did that work out for the Native Americans?"
When I was a kid, my folks had the coffee table book including this painting, and I thought it was the coolest thing, in a gory kind of way, for a 7 year old. I would look at this book endlessly.
