Investigators Probing Whether Others Were in Gunman’s Suite (IRS: 2015 made $5M Gambling)
NBC News ^

Investigators are trying to nail down whether anyone else was in the hotel suite reserved by the Las Vegas gunman during the time he was registered there, multiple senior law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation into the shooting told NBC News.

The investigators are puzzled by two discoveries: First, a charger was found that does not match any of the cell phones that belonged to Stephen Paddock, the man who killed himself inside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino after sending a barrage of bullets down on a crowd of 22,000 people below.

And second, garage records show that during a period when Paddock's car left the hotel garage, one of his key cards was used to get into his room.

They are also examining his finances. IRS records show that Paddock was a very successful gambler, earning at least $5 million in 2015. Some of that could be from his other investments, but most of it was from gambling, officials say.

Read this interview with a Las Vegas gambler who makes a living playing video poker machines. I have a friend who works at a sports book in Vegas who estimates a few dozen gamblers make a living doing this They play selected machines that pay over 100% and keep others informed when there are special payout machines. They move from casino to casino and know when to increase their bets It's a lot of work but it can be done.

How far back do the casino cameras archive?

At the big casinos, I would imagine the video is saved for a long time or possibly infidelity because of their liability and fraud risk exposure.

I would tend to agree. So it would be one of the most obvious things to look through - which would mean that they know already, they just haven’t disclosed details.

I meant to say the video is possibly saved *indefinitely*..

And I concur, they’re clearly not revealing everything they know. Could be for a good reason. Then again, it might be motivated by less than honorable intentions. I don’t know.

“buying poker chips with illegal money does not launder money”

True, but cashing in the remaining chips after a small loss is where the 1099 is generated(you don’t cash the chips in at the table) - once tax is paid on the amount on the 1099 the money becomes clean - no need to create a fake 1099 when the casino gives you a real one that the IRS can match with your return - Casino loves the money you lost - IRS loves the tax on the 1099 “winnings” income - everybody happy and remaining money is CLEAN

plus the losses can be offset up to the amount of the “winnings”

I’m really surprised the reporters are not demanding the feds/cops to reveal what hotel video of Paddock and or his associates movements in and around the hotel reveals.

The phone charger MIGHT have been left by a previous guest...

That would have been removed by the cleaning people after the previous guest checked out.

If someone other than him used the room key then that someone is on video doing it.

Later this afternoon I listened to the update/conference with the under-sheriff and a reporter asked about this (card key being used while car was out) and he said they have no such report.

So.. perhaps NBC made this story up?

Money laundering? I dunno, I've never heard of anyone who was caught or charged with laundering money and then decided to commit mass murder. That just does not make a lot of sense to me.

It's almost as if Paddock was being bankrolled. Did he blackmail someone or a company after he caught them committing fraud back during his days as an accountant? Was be able to embezzle a huge sum of money during that time?

The garage would be quicker. Garage has elevator service, I assume.

The Mandalay Bay garage is a loooooong way from the hotel tower. No direct access. But the street is even further.

His job history is one of government employment. US Post Office, then IRS, Then Defense Dept as an auditor. But appears to have no full time employment for last 30 years.

Consider that he may well have gone to work for the CIA or another spook outfit 30 years ago and continued on the govt payroll. Maybe not officially but as a black asset - handling money.

I figure it is about 85% chance certaintaty his gambling was mostly about money laundering. Who was he working for? Spooks? Criminal organizations? Maybe both.
