her comment got me to researching. Under the definition of lynching being extrajudicial hanging or death by mob, attended by more than 3 people, in the present day, lynching seems to be more of a black crime than a white crime:

“The Tuskegee Institute has recorded 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites being lynched between 1882 and 1968... A five-year study published in 2015 by the Equal Justice Initiative found that nearly 3,959 black men, women, and children were lynched in the twelve Southern states between 1877 and 1950. Over this period Georgia’s 586 lynchings led all states.[12][13][14]....In a prefatory essay in Without Sanctuary, historian Leon F. Litwack writes that between 1882 and 1968, at least 4,742 African Americans were murdered that way.”
“(However, the veracity of said article must be called into question as the figure 4,742 is for all people lynched, black & white (non-black), throughout the entire U.S. between 1882 and 1968)[54].”

[Between the end of the Civil War, when a total of 4 million blacks populated the South and the ] “first half of the 20th century, 6.5 million African Americans migrated from the South...[which brings into question how statistics of lynchings per 100,000 were calculated]”

“Thousands of workers were brought in by [Mississippi Delta] planters to do lumbering and work on levees. Whites were lynched at a rate 35.5% higher than their proportion in the population, most often accused of crimes against property (chiefly theft). During the Delta’s frontier era, blacks were lynched at a rate lower than their proportion in the population...”

And then I read this, at the same article, and if it’s correct, it seems lynching charges have become a black problem in that, in the years between 1998-2003, more lynching charges were levied against blacks and black juveniles - in one state - than the entire post-Civil War tally against whites. It’s so bad, the SC legislature changed ‘lynching’ to a more politically correct ‘mob violence’ and it makes one wonder, if SC is this bad, what about other states?:

“In 2003, all but two of the state’s 46 counties charged blacks with lynching out of proportion to their representation in the population. In the prior 5 years, 4,000 adults had been charged, 136 had been convicted. Black suspects were convicted at twice the rate of white suspects. 1,400 juvenile lynching charges were filed, and, in 2002, 231 black youths were convicted, ten times as many as white youths.[132][133] In 2010, The South Carolina Sentencing Reform Commission voted to rename the law “assault and battery by a mob” and to soften consequences for situations in which no one was killed or seriously injured in an attack by two or more people on a single victim.[135][136]
