President Donald Trump sparked a backlash from some of the biggest names in professional sports over the weekend after he attacked football players who refuse to stand during the national anthem in protest and rescinded a White House invitation to the Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry.
On Sunday, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a supporter and donor who gave the president his Super Bowl ring, released a statement criticizing Trump's comments and backing players to use their platform in order to draw attention to political issues.
"I am deeply disappointed by the tone of the comments made by the president on Friday," Kraft said in a written statement. "There is no greater unifier in this country than sports, and unfortunately, nothing more divisive than politics."
"Our players are intelligent, thoughtful and care deeply about our community and I support their right to peacefully affect social change and raise awareness in a manner that they feel is most impactful."
Kraft's statement came shortly after Trump doubled down on his stance, tweeting early Sunday, that if "NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!"

Of course, Kraft is angry at Trump. If people become ‘former NFL fans’, Kraft will lose billions on his NFL franchise.
I wasn't a huge fan. Well at least not recently.
But this is the last nail in the coffin for me. My family feels the same way.
Since the NFL is a business, the owners and players alike should rethink your attitudes and change. You shouldn't be pissing off your customers.
Anyway, I will not be returning. Never.
Giant Fan as well....but buh bye NFL
“”Our players are intelligent, thoughtful and care deeply about our community””
HA! I guess maybe Kraft has the same IQ as the majority of his players - 0 -. Nothing intelligent about showing disrespect for the country that allows you to be a total scumbag and earn millions of dollars doing it. I don’t know if the majority of the players have low or no IQ or are in agreement but wouldn’t it be nice if some of them had the guts to say, “This is crazy and disrespectful of this country”..
Why on earth are people so afraid to speak up today? Are we that far gone? Very few came to the defense of Eric Bolling from among his coworkers at FOX and why not? Afraid of losing their jobs? Tough - you stand by friends and who among them couldn’t live handsomely on what they’ve been paid already?
Trump has to sort out who his friends and his enemies are. The more he stands for the country, the more friends who desert him. As the old saying goes, “with friends like these, who needs enemies?” Trump doesn’t need any of them.
NFL, NBA, MLB can kiss my butt. I’m not watching anymore, not buying any advertisers products and not buying a ticket to a game. I don’t thinks Trumps comments had anything to do with race, but everything to do with patriotism, loyalty to this country and it’s flag and the brave men and women who died protecting it. When the National Anthem is played, stand up, hand over heart and sing along. Doing anything else is insulting to me and the other men and women who defended this country. I could care less about race relations anymore. It’s a problem that can’t be fixed. Shut up and stop being a victim.
They are crapping on the US Flag.
The flag represents every man, woman and child, living in each of the 50 states (the stars) and it also represents our struggle to throw off the chains of King George. (the thirteen stripes)
The US Flag also was being flown by the Union Army as they defeated the slave-state democRATs of the Confederacy.
These are things the filthy oppressed-millionaire “kneelers” might have learned had they actually attended all the college classes (that we paid for) to get their “degree”.
Kraft knows that 80% of his players who are making him a fortune are black. He would rather patronize them than respect the flag. Its in the end all about the bucks for the owners. Doubt any would say, “I’d rather fire my best players ( who earn me loads of money), than disparage my heritage.” The only question is will they in fact losea significant number of football addicted fans.
Does he think Trump supporters give a flying rat’s a$$ what he thinks?
The greatest unifying force in the country is the symbol of its freedom, and that aint the NFL.
Everyone that is placing themselves and their organisation above the flag of the United States is in for a very rude awakening. And I'm loving it!
“”Our Flag flies everyday!””
Ours does too but had to take it down before Hurricane Irma and waiting to see if we’re going to get hit again before I put it back out....
The whole time the owners were whistling past the graveyard and trying to balance their players (their employees) concerns with their customer’s (the fans) concerns.
Trump has simply shined a spotlight on the problem and now we can no longer pretend.
They are all terrified of being called racist. Black privilege is real, IMO.
Maybe they can get the Dixie Chicks to play at half time
That will work...../snicker
Let’s see how the owners like sharply declining revenues.
I bet they soon decide to stop playing the national anthem “out of respect for the players and their fans” or some such contrived BS that their PR departments dream up. Anything to stop the financial bleeding.
Its all about the money. It always is.
The NFL is 70% black players and all these rich white guys are terrified of being called racist. They are making billions. So they think: Why rock the boat?
Kraft’so team is now the UN-PATRIOTS
<...Shut up and stop being a victim...>
??????????????????
Sports should not in involve politics. It is entertainment. Players made it political. If I want politics I follow the news. Follow FreeRepublic.
You can stop with that psychotic rant. the US civil war was fought to "preserver the Union". That is what Goon Lincoln told us. I take him at his world.
