An engineering student from Gwinnett County was fatally shot by a police officer on Georgia Tech’s campus Saturday night.

The GBI is investigating the incident in which the student, who has been identified by Georgia Tech spokesman Lance Wallace as 21-year-old Scout Schultz of Lilburn, was allegedly barefoot and carrying a knife.

The student’s legal name was Scott Shultz, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

At least two students shared cellphone video showing the tense interaction between Schultz and Georgia Tech police officers, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Schultz yells at police to shoot and officers respond, “Drop the knife! Drop the knife!" more than a dozen times.

Schultz was president of Pride Alliance at Georgia Tech.

The Georgia Tech Progressive Student Alliance said at 4 p.m. they would place flowers and memorabilia on 8th street in front of West Village.

A net? Lol

Tell you what. Let’s get on a open football field. Give me a knife and you get a net. I’m coming to kill you with my knife.

Within 2 minutes you’ll realize why I’ll be laughing about this all day.

A net....

I took that to be a reference to people from the funny farm catching crazy people with a net.

Btw, thanks the nice comment. And too bad for the suspect, a simple $1. bean bag round, a K9 or stun gun probably could have saved this guys life and eliminated his threat with little effort. Nobody won here.

Costco near us when a woman serving samples lost it and started waving around a small paring knife.

Ah, was she told to drop the knife? Did she? Tsk-tsk.

Police are not trained to shoot to “wing.” People confuse what happens on TV and in the movies with reality.

The problem comes in with the word “probably”. No one is going to be a cop for $17.50 an hour if they have to use nonlethal means against clearly lethal weapons like knives.

Agreed. Pepper spray is also good for attitude adjustment.

Maybe GA Tech will spend more resources on security training and policies instead of the PC programs it’s no doubt funding.

The Left doesn’t give a damn about mental illness. It was Pete Domenici (R) (RIP) that forced health insurers to give a damn.

It’s an interesting dichotomy where Conservatives focus on the factors of mental illness, and the Left focuses on exploiting it — yet, the Left somehow manages to look like the feel-good guy.

He was obviously raped or molested. Sad.

Crisis intervention teams are a good idea, but when you have a non compliant suspect armed with a knife who is bound and determined to get inside your reactionary gap, the officer on the scene has to make a decision. The officer decided he didn’t want to get stabbed. I’m sorry the student died. But the decision was his to make, and he chose poorly.
