President Trump’s border wall could carve path through Native American lands
KVOA-TV ^ | September 16, 2017 | NBC News

Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Edward Manuel is determined to prevent President Trump's proposed border wall from carving a path through his tribe's lands — a move which he said would separate members from much needed resources and disrupt the community’s way of life.

The nation, which is about the size of Connecticut, is a federally recognized tribe that has land and members on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border.

“Walls are made to keep animals in or out, walls cannot contain people,” Manuel said. “People are too intelligent. They can always find a way to get over the wall, under the wall or through the wall.”

The Tohono O’odham Nation is just one of many groups that have expressed concerns about the potential path of the president's proposed $1.6 billion border wall. The National Congress of American Indians is also calling on the U.S. government to work with tribes on the border to address their concerns about the impact on communities.

Much of the nearly 2,000 mile border is owned by private citizens. The government may gain rights to the land via “eminent domain laws.” These laws would allow the land to be bought out from under the owners, some of whom have already begun receiving notices.....

All of our land could be considered as native american land.
My house is built on native american land.
The street out front is built on native american land.
My ancestors are buried on native american land.

Treaty Indians are enshrined in the US Constitution, only they are granted Rights by virtue of treaty - the Amendments are privileges granted to all others and, unlike Treaty Indian Rights, can be revoked at any given time - at least according to SCOTUS.

The Constitution, according to SCOTUS, grants Treaty Tribes Sovereign status, giving them Rights which are not applicable to non-Indians, ie you, me.

The Reservation Indians are saying they need more money for the ruling families so they can maintain the life styes they would like to become accustomed to. Non-ruling families are just tokens for generating more income for the few. All of that and more is why most Indians do not live on Reservations.

Build the wall north around the “reservation”, leaving it open to Mexico. That way they have access to whatever those much needed resources are.

“The tribes are probably thinking, “damn, we should have built a wall”.”

They will probably be “mollified” if the Feds build them another casino or two astride the border with a back door so they can fleece Mexicans too.

Plus that county island that they bought near the stadium in Glendale and turned into a reservation so they could put a casino there

I thought the “Native Americans” had tried unrestricted immigration before and it didn’t work out so well for them.

No need to! The right of way or easement for the US southern border is already there. There is already a fence from the Rio Grande to the West coast. They may own land north and south but they do not own the border.

I was born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, so I’m a Native American, although I’m not of Aborigine ascendancy. I will not be offended as long as it’s in my United States of America.

Yep some of their lands are on both sides of the US/Mexico border.
So the fence would run thru them. But I bet solutions can be found.

"But, if worse comes to worst we can build the damn wall around the rest of the entire reservation and have checkpoints for anyone exiting the native land into free America."

I suspect it wouldn't come to that. After a period of time in which that land became the only path for entry I think they would either close the opening themselves or construct a barrier line of a connected series of toll booths.
