President Trumps signature campaign promise, the building of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, will remain on the back burner, the president said Thursday morning.
The wall will come later, Trump told reporters as he prepared to depart for Florida. Were right now renovating large sections of wall, massive sections, making it brand new. Were doing a lot of renovations, were building four different samples of the wall to see which one were going to choose, and the wall is going to be built, it will be funded a little bit later.
Well, we want to get massive border security, and I think both Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer I think they agree with it. We met last night, as you know, Schumer, Pelosi and a whole group and I think were fairly close, but we have to get massive border security.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement Wednesday night that Trump had agreed to support DACA legislation without getting funding for the wall in return.
We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, thats acceptable to both sides, they said.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders pushed back against that claim Wednesday night. While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to, she said.
Trumps statements Thursday morning made clear, though, that amnesty supporters will get their wish far sooner than supporters of the wall will get theirs.
In a series of tweets Thursday morning, Trump defended his new support for amnesty.
Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military? he asked. They have been in our country for many years through no fault of their own brought in by parents at young age. Plus BIG border security.
and you too.
“When he was on the campaign trail, constitutionally low-information Trump didn’t seem to understand that POTUS is constitutionally “married” to Congress. He consequently got patriots’ hopes too high by giving the wrong impression that MAGA was simply a matter of pen and phone like Obama’s unconstitutional unilateral actions were.”
The problem I have with what you say is that not all of President Trump’s inactions on campaign promises are down to the relationship between POTUS and Congress.
Take, for instance, his statements about locking up Hillary. That isn’t down to Congress that nothing has happened, that’s him not picking up the phone and calling Sessions to tell him to get his butt in gear and start a criminal investigation of Clinton. Just today, the President was referring to ‘Crooked Hillary’:
Crooked Hillary Clinton blames everybody (and every thing) but herself for her election loss. She lost the debates and lost her direction! Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 14, 2017
He took an oath of office. If he, as we all do, believes Clinton is guilty of criminal acts, he has a responsibility to order the DoJ to act on that. I don’t see how you can keep on calling someone crooked if you aren’t willing to stand by your words and push to prove it.
Absolutely Congress is a big problem on a lot of issues. But I would be a lot more reassured that it is the only reason things we were promised aren’t getting done if the President were taking action on campaign pledges where Congress aren’t involved.
In short: lock her up, Mr President!
You’re right. I’m listening Mr. President. What say you?
I believe the real opponent is the RINO congress, that should have recognized the will of the voters and supported Trump’s agenda from day 1.
Democrats are open about their agenda. It’s the RINO’s who have been lying through their teeth, saying one thing and doing another.
Trump says that he is “fairly close” to a deal with the Democrats. Even though he apparently is getting absolutely nothing in exchange for amnesty. He’s not even close to annything I’d consider acceptable.
Give us all the details since you oppose it...Oh, you don't know what's in the deal.
We know it doesn’t include a wall. Trump himself said so.
